now that Dustin Gee was a proper talent. died much too early of a heart attack.
Bella Emberg supported quite a few comedians and was talented in her field especially as she didn't seem to take herself seriously.

Bungo, perhaps it's a PLOT to confound us. The origins of the phrase are vague.

Les Dennis may have been bumped off in Coronation Street but he is still alive and well in real life.

Think it was mentioned before that the expression came from families getting compensation when their American soldier sons got killed in action which often enabled them to buy THE farm on which they lived.
Not A farm or the dead persons farm but THE family farm.

It's a good point. Is it always the same farm that changes hands with great regularity? Do they get forewarned of their demise so they can get a survey done?

I feel we should be told.

Why is it THE farm? Not A or THEIR?

Deeds must be bloody complicated at this place.

Agree. Mind you, I find the older I get, the more interesting the past becomes.

I do find my youngest son's inability to use the internet to find things out remarkable though. I think he just prefers to ask me for some reason.

Re: Bella Emberg has bought the farm.
May well be right.
I always think it’s part of me turning into an old bastard but often bemused about the lack of curiosity of younger people about people and events of the past ..::: ‘That was before I was born’ etc
You’d think the internet would rectify that but it seems more a TOOL for LOL’s and LIKES and pictures of cats and ‘following’ nonentities.

Possibly because of the earlier actress Sybil Thorndike. Too much scope for possible confusion?

NB Always puzzled why some seem to be proud of the gaps in their knowledge. Was she a notable world figure? No, but if I see something written about someone I've never heard of, my first inclination is to look them up, as I might learn something, rather than proudly profess my ignorance.

Was born Sybil Dyke
